Uzbekistan to monitor illegal logging and waste dumps from space
Uzbekistan
Starting January 1, 2026, Uzbekistan will expand the use of satellite monitoring in geology, land management, and ecology. The President has signed a decree mandating the Space Research and Technology Agency to conduct observations at least three times a year.
Key priorities include:
From March 1, 2026, all violations will be recorded digitally through the SGM platform, providing real-time updates on warnings, corrective measures, and the status of cases under review by prosecutors and courts.
Previously, “Uzbekcosmos” satellites detected nearly 2,500 cases of illegal straw burning on over 27,000 hectares of farmland. In the past two years, more than 4 million hectares of agricultural land were inspected, revealing multiple cases of misused plots and irregularities in crop cultivation.
- detecting illegal tree cutting;
- monitoring unauthorized land use and construction;
- identifying landfill expansions beyond permitted zones and the creation of illegal dumpsites.
