The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called on Israel to refrain from a full-scale assault on the city of Rafah in the besieged Gaza Strip. This was reported by Anadolu, citing the WHO chief.

WHO: Israeli ground operation in Rafah would be humanitarian catastrophe
The leadership of Israel must refrain from a full-scale ground offensive on Rafah — a city in the southern sector of Gaza, where about 1.5 million civilians remain — as this will "result in a humanitarian catastrophe," the head of the organization wrote on social media X.

"We urge all parties to work for a ceasefire and lasting peace," the message said.

The population of the city of Rafah in the southern sector of Gaza was around 280,000 before the start of the massive Israeli attacks on October 7, 2023. After the attacks began, out of 2.3 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip, 1.9 million became displaced persons.

Most of the displaced persons were accommodated in Rafah, which Israel had previously declared a "safe zone." Thus, the population of the city reached one and a half million people.

The Israeli army often conducts attacks on the city of Rafah. In the event of a ground offensive, peaceful residents will have nowhere to flee.

On April 8, the head of the Israeli government stated that the date for the assault on Rafah had already been determined.

The Israeli channel KAN reported that the ground offensive on Rafah would start "very soon".
