WHO Warns of Rapid Spread of New Flu Strain
World
The World Health Organization is warning of the rapid spread of a new influenza variant as the flu season begins earlier than usual in the Northern Hemisphere.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned about the fast global spread of a new influenza A(H3N2) variant. The announcement was made in Geneva by Wenqing Zhang, head of WHO’s Global Respiratory Threats division.
According to the organization, the influenza season in the Northern Hemisphere has started earlier than usual, while other respiratory viruses are also actively circulating. Particular concern is being raised by the new A(H3N2) strain, which is characterized by a high rate of transmission.
WHO reports that the variant was first detected in August in Australia and New Zealand and has since been identified in more than 30 countries worldwide. Although the strain is not included in the current season’s vaccines for the Northern Hemisphere, existing vaccines still reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
The organization also warned that upcoming holiday periods and increased travel could trigger a new surge in infections. WHO is urging countries to strengthen health system preparedness and to actively promote vaccination, especially among high-risk groups.
