Iranian authorities believe US and Israeli efforts to secure a ceasefire may be aimed less at achieving a lasting settlement than at easing economic pressure and preparing for a possible resumption of hostilities. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this, citing unnamed Iranian officials and intelligence assessments.

According to the newspaper, Tehran views the current negotiations as a possible temporary pause. Iranian authorities are reportedly maintaining their readiness for further confrontation, reflecting deep mistrust between the parties.

The WSJ reports that Iran is strengthening the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ role in military command, appointing war veterans to key positions and accelerating the production of missiles and drones. Counterintelligence operations are also being expanded.

Sources cited by the newspaper said the confrontation could potentially extend beyond conventional military operations, including threats to infrastructure in the Persian Gulf and efforts to destabilize conditions in parts of the region. These claims are based on intelligence assessments from Arab states and sources cited by the WSJ.

At the same time, Tehran is reportedly concerned about the consequences of further escalation, including the risk of increased domestic instability.

The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June that called for an end to hostilities and the start of negotiations. The arrangement later broke down, with military operations resuming. Mutual distrust continues to complicate efforts to reach a diplomatic settlement.
