Uzbek Population Genome Reveals a Blend of European and Asian Components

An analysis of genetic material from around 2,000 people living in different regions of Uzbekistan has provided new data on the country’s population genetics. According to geneticist and academician Shakhlo Turdikulova, the findings demonstrate a pronounced combination of European and Asian genetic components.

Uzbek Population Genome Reveals a Blend of European and Asian Components
“The genome of Uzbeks is an ideal bridge between Europe and Asia,” Turdikulova told Uzdiplomat. According to the data presented, around two-thirds of the identified genetic components are associated with European populations, while roughly one-third is linked to Asian populations.

Scientists stress, however, that these figures describe the study sample and do not mean that every person in Uzbekistan has the same genetic proportion.

The research is relevant not only to the study of population origins and genetic diversity but also to practical medicine. Many existing genetic studies and diagnostic approaches rely predominantly on data from European populations, while genetic characteristics can vary between population groups.

Building a population-specific genomic database could help researchers identify genetic markers characteristic of Uzbekistan’s population. In the longer term, such data could support the assessment of inherited disease risks, diagnostics and the development of more targeted treatment approaches.

The research is also connected with the national “1000 Genomes of Uzbekistan” project, which aims to build a genetic map of the population and establish national biobank infrastructure.
