The traditional knowledge and craftsmanship of building Kyrgyz, Kazakh, and Karakalpak yurts have been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The announcement came from Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Administration of the President of Uzbekistan, who emphasized that the decision marks an important international recognition of the region’s shared cultural heritage.

The decision was adopted during the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in New Delhi. This year, 54 submissions from various countries were reviewed.

According to Saida Mirziyoyeva, the inscription highlights the depth of historical traditions, the strength of spiritual heritage, and the enduring connection between generations. She expressed gratitude to the artisans, researchers, and custodians who preserve these traditional skills.

The nomination dedicated to the creation of nomadic dwellings of Turkic peoples was first added to the list in 2014 through the initiative of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Uzbekistan later proposed expanding the nomination by adding the Karakalpak yurt. The updated joint submission by the three countries was successfully approved by UNESCO.
