Zelensky: "First negotiations with Trump, then with the Russians"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared his position on potential meetings with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that he prefers to meet with Trump first and then move on to negotiations with Russia.
Zelensky shared his thoughts in an interview with podcaster Lex Fridman. "I think on January 25 or another day, we will first meet with Trump. We will discuss how to stop the war and Putin. If Trump offers strong security guarantees, then it will be possible to talk to the Russians," Zelensky said.
Zelensky stressed the importance of involving European countries in the process: "It is important for us that Europe also has its voice. Europe supports Ukraine's position." He expressed hope that Trump and European countries could jointly offer strong security guarantees for Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that before any ceasefire, Ukraine must receive clear security guarantees and military support. "If Trump achieves a ceasefire, and three months later Putin starts a new attack, both Trump and Ukraine will lose in this situation. Right now, Putin is afraid of Trump. But if Trump agrees to a ceasefire without serious security guarantees for Ukraine, it will give Putin a new opportunity," Zelensky explained.
In Zelensky's view, negotiations should begin between the U.S. and Ukraine to address security issues. Only after that, with active European involvement, can peace talks with Russia be considered.
