If until 2024, this drug was rarely detected in Russia, by 2024, law enforcement officers had seized 1 kilogram of carfentanil, and in the early months of 2025, another 100 grams of the substance.

The substance is a synthetic opioid and a derivative of fentanyl. It was first synthesized in 1974 by the Janssen company.

Studies show that carfentanil is 5000 times stronger than heroin and 10,000 times stronger than morphine. It is used as a tranquilizer for large mammals such as elephants, rhinos, bulls, and antelopes.

It is reported that China is one of the main producers of carfentanil.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has classified this drug as one of the most potent commercial opioids in the world.

The lethal dose for humans is only 2 mcg (0.002 mg). In Russia, carfentanil has been included in the list of controlled psychotropic substances.
