Uzbekistan Opens Its First Consulate in the Pacific Northwest of the US

On September 4, the official opening ceremony of the Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Washington State was held in Seattle. The new mission is Uzbekistan’s first consular institution in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and is expected to provide a new platform for expanding bilateral ties.
More than 200 representatives of state and local authorities, business, academic, cultural and diplomatic circles, as well as Central Asian diaspora organizations, attended the event. Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs represented the US side. Representatives of Microsoft, Amazon, Boeing, Meta, Google and Oracle were also among the guests.
The ceremony began with a symbolic ribbon-cutting, followed by the raising of the national flag of Uzbekistan over the consulate building. The national anthem was performed by singer Jenisbek Piyazov and the “Xalqlar Do‘stligi” musical ensemble.
Speakers noted that the opening reflects Uzbekistan’s permanent diplomatic presence on the US West Coast and marks a new stage in the strategic partnership between the two countries. Guests were briefed on Uzbekistan’s reforms, including economic liberalization, support for the private sector, digitalization, education and innovation, as well as efforts to create an open and predictable environment for foreign investors.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson sent a video address in which he described the new mission as Uzbekistan’s first consular institution not only in the state but across the entire US West Coast. He said the consulate would create new opportunities for cooperation in trade and investment, technology, innovation, education, scientific research, culture and tourism.
Steve Hobbs also expressed the state administration’s readiness for systematic cooperation, including establishing direct business contacts, organizing mutual trade and business missions, and advancing joint projects.
The consulate began operating in March. It is headed by career diplomat Ahror Burkhanov, who previously served as press secretary of Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to the United States Furkat Sidikov, who attended the ceremony, described the opening as a new platform for strengthening bilateral cooperation. “Seattle is a global leader in technology, innovation and industry. It is an ideal place for our future cooperation,” he said.
The cultural programme included a presentation of Uzbek cuisine, with plov prepared for the guests, while the “Uzbekistan Culture Corner” showcased materials on the country’s history, cultural heritage, arts, traditions and tourism opportunities.
It is worth noting that the Consulate General will provide consular services to Uzbek citizens in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, protect their rights and interests, strengthen ties with the diaspora, and support trade, economic, investment, technological, educational, cultural and tourism cooperation.
