Annalena Baerbock: German Troops to Be Deployed to Ukraine-Russia Borders
World
If an agreement is reached between Ukraine and Russia on a ceasefire, according to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, German soldiers may be deployed to the former front lines to ensure peace.
Baerbock made this statement during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, emphasizing the importance of NATO membership for Ukraine and the participation of international troops as a security guarantee for peace. She also mentioned that Germany is ready to take all necessary measures to ensure peace in the future.
The new European Union foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said at the end of last week that European countries, including France and the Baltic states, could carry out a peacekeeping mission.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte openly stated that Ukraine cannot expect rapid NATO membership before Donald Trump's inauguration.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha participated for the first time in a NATO-Ukraine Council meeting in Brussels. He believes that NATO membership is the only real security guarantee for Ukraine against Russia.
President Zelensky continues to demand quicker NATO membership and intends to put pressure on Moscow. At the same time, Zelensky is ready to temporarily recognize the territories occupied by Russia.
NATO Secretary General Rutte told Zelensky not to have high hopes in this matter. He emphasized that NATO's current task is to provide military assistance, and Ukraine must be in a "position of strength" before negotiating with Russia.
