Azerbaijan marks the 106th anniversary of the establishment of its armed forces
The armed forces of the country were established on 26 June 1918 by a decree of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR). Khosrov bey Sultanov was appointed the first Minister of Defence. The first military parade was held in 1919. However, after the Soviet occupation in 1920, the Ministry of Defence was abolished, and the army was disbanded.

With the restoration of independence in 1991, Azerbaijan reestablished its armed forces. Since 1998, 26 June has been officially celebrated as Armed Forces Day. In 2011, a military parade was held in Baku in honor of the 20th anniversary of the restoration of independence.

Currently, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces are the strongest army in the South Caucasus in terms of material and technical equipment and combat capability.
