Basil and Astragalus: Uzbekistan Develops a New Phytocomplex

Scientists at the Institute of Chemistry of Plant Substances of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan are developing a new phytocomplex based on extracts of basil, astragalus and other local medicinal plants. Technological samples obtained in the study have demonstrated antioxidant and antihypoxic activity.

The research is being carried out under the applied project “Creation of Phytocomplexes Based on Extracts of Basil, Astragalus and Related Plants”, financed by the Agency for Innovative Development. The project is valued at UZS 1.409 billion 357 thousand and is scheduled for 2025–2027. The project is led by Dania Asilbekova, Doctor of Biological Sciences and leading researcher at the Institute’s Laboratory of Physical Research Methods.

The researchers are studying basil varieties, mountain basil, kiyikўt, arslonquloq and various species of astragalus growing and cultivated in Uzbekistan. Essential oils and other biologically active compounds contained in the plant material are being examined using modern laboratory methods.

Initial studies have allowed the scientists to select the most promising types of local plant material for further development and obtain technological samples of extracts. Their antioxidant activity is associated with the ability to counter oxidative processes and the effects of free radicals, while antihypoxic activity refers to the ability to support cell viability under oxygen-deficient conditions.

The research is continuing, with scientists determining the composition of active extracts, studying their properties and conducting additional tests to confirm the findings. Upon completion of the project, the team plans to create a phytocomplex containing a range of biologically active compounds derived from locally sourced plant material.

In the longer term, the findings may provide a scientific and technological basis for developing products based on local plant raw materials for the food and cosmetics industries. To date, the project has resulted in two articles published in foreign and domestic scientific journals, two papers in international conference proceedings, one paper in a national conference publication and three abstracts.
