The sudden deaths of leading experts in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in China have raised concerns among the public. In recent years, several prominent AI specialists have died unexpectedly, prompting questions about their personal safety and the levels of stress they face. As AI lies at the heart of the tech rivalry between China and the United States, the issue has become even more relevant. This was reported by South China Morning Post.

According to the report, in June 2022, Sun Jian, Chief Scientist of the Chinese company Megvii, died at the age of 45 from a “sudden illness.” Previously, he worked at Microsoft Research Asia for 13 years before joining Megvii in 2016. He played a leading role in the development of the ShuffleNet neural network and the Brain++ platform. Sun Jian was listed among MIT Technology Review’s top innovators under 35. The exact cause of his death was not disclosed.

A year later, another prominent expert in the military use of AI, Associate Professor Feng Yanhe of the National University of Defense Technology in Beijing, died at the age of 38.

Also that same year, Tang Xiao’ou, founder of the tech giant SenseTime and a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, died of a sudden illness at age 55. His death led to a sharp drop in the company’s shares. Tang played a major role in developing facial recognition technologies in China.

One year later, He Zhi, one of the co-founders and CEO of innovation-focused company Yidu Tech, passed away at the age of 41.

This year, AI expert and Associate Professor Xuan Yuhui of the School of Computer Science at South China University of Technology also passed away. The cause of his death has not been made public either. Experts emphasize the need for in-depth investigation into these cases and ensuring the safety of researchers.
