Environmental oversight strengthened in Tashkent
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree titled “On urgent measures to improve the environmental situation in the city of Tashkent.” The document establishes a special commission tasked with coordinating state agencies and developing comprehensive solutions to address environmental challenges in the capital.

The commission will design and oversee the implementation of measures aimed at improving air quality, preserving and expanding green areas, reducing harmful vehicle emissions, and strengthening compliance with environmental requirements at industrial enterprises.

The decree grants the commission the authority to introduce temporary restrictions during periods of increased natural dust levels, including:

— limits on industrial enterprises, transportation, and heating systems;
— a ban on truck traffic within the city;
— vehicle restrictions based on odd–even license plate numbers (with electric vehicles exempted);
— temporary suspension of greenhouses and other facilities emitting harmful substances;
— setting emission standards and halting operations of non-compliant enterprises;
— temporary restrictions on construction activities and mandatory use of dust-suppression equipment;
— a ban on construction in water-protection zones along rivers, canals, and irrigation channels.

The decree emphasizes that these measures aim to improve Tashkent’s overall environmental conditions, protect public health, and create a more comfortable living environment.
