The European Commission has announced that it will take countermeasures in response to the potential introduction of 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum by the United States. Brussels considers these tariffs illegal and counterproductive, warning that they could escalate the trade conflict between the EU and the US.
The European Union has expressed concern over US President Donald Trump's plans to impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, including those from Europe. In an official statement, the European Commission emphasized that such measures would harm both economies and contradict the principles of international trade. The EU is prepared to take retaliatory action if the tariffs come into effect.
"The EU sees no justification for such tariffs and will protect the interests of European businesses, workers, and consumers," the Commission stated.
French President Emmanuel Macron, in an interview with CNN, stressed that the US’s main competitor is China, while Europe should be seen as an ally. He warned Washington against taking measures that could undermine economic cooperation.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to meet with US Vice President J.D. Vance at a summit in Paris, where discussions are expected to focus on ways to prevent the escalation of the trade conflict.
