Yu Chengdong, the corporation's top manager, said, "A genuine operating system requires a foundation and an ecosystem. HarmonyOS NEXT is a real operating system, not just an Android shell." The company also emphasised that the released operating system is not based on a "primitive Linux kernel", which increases the autonomy of HarmonyOS NEXT.

The system is fully integrated with artificial intelligence. In addition, HarmonyOS NEXT can be used on a variety of platforms including smartphones, tablets, smart watches and other gadgets. Specific timelines for the release of the public version of HarmonyOS NEXT have not been disclosed.

In December 2020, Huawei unveiled the first version of HarmonyOS, which was positioned as an alternative to Android. However, XDA Developers analysed this operating system and stated that it largely resembles the OS from Google.
