In the Indian state of Karnataka, more than two hundred people filed complaints with the cyber police, claiming they were victims of fraudsters who used US President Donald Trump's image to promote a fake investment app. The damage is estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars.
According to The Times of India, citing cyber-police data, nearly 200 people in the state of Karnataka have fallen victim to fraudsters who used artificially created images and videos of US President Donald Trump in the last 5-6 months.
In Karnataka, about 200 users reported that they invested money in an app called "Trump Hotel Rental" and lost a total of about 20 million rupees (about 234,000 US dollars), - the publication says.
According to police, the scammers convinced users to invest money under the pretext of earning 100% profit - and even more - in a short period. The application was supposedly an investment platform associated with the name of the American leader.
It is noted that more than 800 people may have been deceived, but only a few have filed official complaints. Some of the victims lost up to one million rupees (approximately $11,700).
The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the identities of the perpetrators and the scale of the spread of fake content.
