Katalin Novak has resigned amid public pressure on her to pardon a man previously convicted of helping cover up sexual abuse at an orphanage. This is reported by Reuters.

Hungary's President Novak resigned
“I made a mistake … Today is the last day that I address you as a president,” she said in a speech broadcast on state television.

It is noted that this week Hungary's opposition parties demanded Novak's resignation because she accepted a petition for clemency for the former deputy director of a children's home before the Pope's visit in the spring of 2023.

He was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for helping the headmaster cover up sexual abuse of his pupils.

In her appeal, Nowak said she "made a mistake". Now the Hungarian Parliament will elect a new head of state within 30 days. Recall that Katalin Novak began her presidential career in March 2022. She became the first female president in the history of Hungary.
