India and Armenia Expand Military-Technical Cooperation

India and Armenia are expanding defence cooperation, including arms supplies and engagement between their military institutions. On August 17, 2026, Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh held talks in Yerevan with Lieutenant General Edvard Asryan, First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia. The sides exchanged a document establishing a new format of cooperation between the two countries’ military general staffs.

India and Armenia Expand Military-Technical Cooperation
The military-technical partnership covers several categories of Indian defence systems. In 2020, Armenia signed a contract worth about $40 million for four Swathi weapon-locating radar systems designed to detect artillery, mortar and rocket positions.

In 2022, Armenia became the first foreign customer for India’s Akash air-defence system, signing a deal for 15 systems valued at around $720 million. Deliveries began in 2024.

That year, Armenia also reached an agreement with India covering Pinaka multiple-launch rocket systems, including launchers, guided rockets and associated equipment. In January 2026, the dispatch of another batch of guided rockets for the systems was reported.

The partnership is developing as Armenia seeks to diversify its defence procurement sources. For India, the Armenian market provides an opportunity to expand exports of domestically produced defence equipment and strengthen its engagement in the South Caucasus. The official statements on the latest meeting did not specify particular geopolitical objectives behind the cooperation.
