Iran Calls US Economic Pressure a Threat to the Global Financial System

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the US campaign of economic pressure against Tehran as a “diversion” from Washington’s domestic problems and warned that it poses a threat to the global financial system. His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a sweeping economic campaign against Iran.

Iran Calls US Economic Pressure a Threat to the Global Financial System
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States was launching “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” describing it as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.” He also warned that countries whose financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities provide support to Iran would face serious economic consequences.

Trump compared the campaign with the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, calling it an economic “D-Day.” He also called for an end to channels linked to oil smuggling, money transfers, currency exchanges and the use of front companies.

Araghchi, meanwhile, said the so-called economic “D-Day” was intended to divert attention from “unprecedented debt and surging interest costs” in the United States. “US financial terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty throughout the world,” Iran’s foreign minister said.

According to Araghchi, doubling down on the pressure campaign would only lead to further US defeat and increase hostility toward Washington in Iran. At the same time, Trump’s announcement did not provide a detailed list of specific new economic measures.
