Japan has launched its new Optical 8 reconnaissance satellite, which will replace the Optical 6 satellite launched in 2018, which is nearing the end of its lifespan. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries launched the Radar 7 satellite from the same series early last year.

Some of Japan's reconnaissance satellites transmit images of the Earth's surface using optical sensors, while others gather information using radar.

Optical 8 was launched using an H-2A rocket, which was the 48th launch. Two more launches are planned, after which the rocket will be replaced by a new H3 launcher.
