Kyrgyz authorities are discussing the possibility of relocating the nation’s capital from Bishkek to the city of Manas, according to Kamchybek Tashiev, head of the State Committee for National Security and Deputy Prime Minister.

Tashiev noted that such a move would require significant preparation, including the development of infrastructure and readiness of the population. “If we are worthy of it — why not? But it’s not easy to be a capital; it demands major financial and structural transformation,” he said.

He also announced that Manas will receive the status of a city of republican significance in 2026, becoming the third city in Kyrgyzstan with this designation.

On September 17, President Sadyr Japarov signed a law officially renaming the city of Jalal-Abad to Manas. Today, Manas is the third-largest city in the country, home to about 184,000 people and serving as the administrative center of Jalal-Abad region.
