Maduro Demands Arrest of Opposition Leaders Amid Mass Protests
Venezuelan authorities are increasing pressure on the opposition. Nicolás Maduro, declared the winner of the presidential election, has demanded the arrest of his opponent Edmundo González and opposition leader María Corina Machado. The electoral council has not released results at the polling station level, drawing criticism from the international community.

Attorney General Tarek William Saab reported that over 700 protesters have been arrested, and one police officer was killed. Human rights advocates report 11 demonstrators killed nationwide. Machado and González have called for peaceful protests.

The Organization of American States has criticized the Venezuelan government for lack of transparency in the elections and suggested holding new elections with international observers. Peru rejected the election results, leading to the closure of the Venezuelan embassy in Lima.
