Méndez Back at the Helm of Uzbekistan National Team
Sport
Uzbekistan's national futsal team is returning to a proven strategy. One of the most decorated coaches in the history of Uzbek futsal, Spaniard José María Méndez, has officially signed a two-year contract with the national Federation. Fans are eagerly anticipating a repeat of the 2016 triumph when the team reached the very top of the Asian podium under his leadership.
For the 52-year-old specialist from Lugo, this marks his third tenure in Uzbekistan. He previously led the national team during 2011–2012 and 2014–2017. The pinnacle of his career in Tashkent remains the silver medals of the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship.
Méndez brings immense international experience to the table, having worked with top clubs in Spain and Croatia, as well as managing the national teams of Thailand and Vietnam. From 2019 to 2026, he enjoyed a successful stint in Thailand and briefly led the Chinese club Shenzhen in 2023. His resume is stellar: two-time AFC Cup runner-up, and winner of both the AFC Futsal Club Championship and the Asian Cup Winners' Cup.
The return of Méndez is a clear signal: Uzbekistan aims to reclaim its status as a dominant force in Asian futsal and strengthen its position on the global stage.
