South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said on Friday: “Through real-time information sharing with an allied country’s intelligence agency, it has been confirmed that one injured North Korean soldier was captured.”

According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, a photograph of the soldier, who appeared gaunt and injured, was circulated on the Telegram messaging app. However, no detailed information about the soldier’s condition or status has been provided.

Reports of the North Korean soldier’s capture were published by Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi. The outlet stated that special forces captured the soldier in the Kursk region, in territory controlled by Ukrainian forces during their offensive. The publication did not specify when the incident occurred, and no official confirmation has been made by Ukraine or North Korea.

Militarnyi noted that if confirmed, this would mark the first capture of a North Korean combatant by Ukrainian forces.

This week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that more than 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or wounded in the Kursk region.
