Over 1,000 North Korean Soldiers Killed in Ukraine

According to an official statement from South Korean military authorities, over 1,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in combat during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
In a report released on Monday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated, “We confirm that around 1,100 North Korean troops, who recently fought against Ukrainian forces, have suffered casualties.”
Last week, South Korea’s intelligence agency claimed that at least 100 North Korean soldiers had been killed in the conflict since being deployed earlier this month.
The high casualty rate may be linked to “an unfamiliar battlefield environment, where North Korean troops are being used as assault units on the front lines, along with their lack of capacity to counter drone attacks,” said South Korean lawmaker Lee Sung-kwon.
Lee also noted that “some North Korean casualties” resulted from Ukrainian missile and drone strikes as well as training accidents. The highest-ranking casualty, according to him, was “at least at the level of a general.”
The statement further noted that North Korea, alongside rocket launchers and self-propelled artillery, is developing and supplying “kamikaze drones.”
The deployment of North Korean soldiers has intensified the war in Ukraine, as the Kremlin sought its ally’s support to reinforce its forces in the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian troops have made advances. According to The Guardian, this reflects Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to expand the conflict by involving a third country in direct combat operations.
