Pentagon says NATO not seeking conflict with Russia
The North Atlantic Alliance expects to prove to Russia its readiness for self-defence, but does not seek to provoke an armed conflict with it. This was reported by Celeste Wallander, US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs.

Asked how NATO would improve security in the Black Sea without direct confrontation with Russia, she said the alliance intends to do so by following the decisions and instructions of leaders at the Madrid and Vilnius summits. NATO countries approved in Vilnius a plan to deploy 300,000 troops on the alliance's eastern flank.

"Those are defensive capabilities. They are meant to make it very clear that NATO can and will defend itself. The goal is not to provoke a war with Russia," the Pentagon aide said.
