On July 3, Russia officially recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan - a state entity formed by the Taliban after they came to power in 2021. This was stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, confirming the information through the president's special representative for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov.
The decision on recognition was made personally by President Vladimir Putin at the suggestion of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This was announced by Russia's ambassador to Kabul, Dmitry Zhirnov, on the "Russia-1" television channel.
"This decision demonstrates Russia's sincere desire to establish a full-fledged partnership with Afghanistan," Zhirnov emphasized.
A sign of recognition was the raising of the flag set by the Taliban above the Afghan embassy in Moscow. This happened for the first time since they came to power.
