According to The Economist's Global Liveability Index 2023 report, Tashkent ranked 157th out of 173, with a score of 53.9 in the ranking of the most livable cities in the world. The capital of Uzbekistan has lost 13 positions compared to 2022.

Kyiv returned to the rating, having dropped out of it in 2022 against the background of the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The capital of Ukraine ranked 165th out of 173. The assessment of the infrastructure of the city, which was badly damaged during the conflict, was 23.2 points out of 100, being the lowest in the ranking.

Vienna, the capital of Austria, became the leader in the ranking of the most livable cities for the second year in a row. "With its excellent combination of stability, culture and entertainment, and robust infrastructure, Vienna tops the rankings for the fourth time in five years," wrote The Economist. After Vienna are Copenhagen (Denmark), Melbourne (Australia), Sydney (Australia), Vancouver (Canada) and Zurich (Switzerland).

The worst cities to live in, according to the rating, were the Pakistani city of Karachi, the Nigerian Lagos, Algiers (the capital and largest city of the state of Algeria), the Libyan capital Tripoli and the Syrian capital Damascus. The latter has been the least livable city in the ranking for more than a decade.
