The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, has officially received Italian citizenship. This status was granted to him during his visit to Rome by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, ANSA agency reports.

During the meeting at the government residence, the politicians warmly greeted each other, and Meloni presented Milei with the document confirming his new citizenship.

The reason for granting citizenship lies in the president’s family roots. His grandparents emigrated to Argentina in the early 20th century. Milei himself had previously stated that he is "75% Italian." A similar story applies to Pope Francis, who was also born in Argentina and has Italian ancestry.

However, Meloni's decision faced criticism from Italy's left-wing opposition. Opponents accused the prime minister of selective favoritism: while granting citizenship to Milei, Meloni refuses the same right to children of migrants born in Italy, sparking widespread discontent.
