Washington has threatened to revoke Ukraine's access to the Starlink satellite network if Kyiv does not sign an agreement with the U.S. on rare earth metals. Starlink satellites play a crucial role in managing Ukraine's drone operations.

The U.S. Threatens to Cut Ukraine's Access to Starlink
According to Reuters, U.S. authorities have threatened to shut down Ukraine’s access to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system. Sources say this threat emerged during negotiations regarding the U.S. access to Ukrainian resources.

Specifically, the Starlink issue was discussed on February 20 in Kyiv during a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg.

Earlier, at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky rejected the initial agreement proposed by Washington. However, in recent days, Donald Trump’s administration has presented Kyiv with a new deal, according to Axios.

Following Russia’s invasion, Elon Musk provided Ukraine with thousands of Starlink terminals, replacing destroyed communication infrastructure. As Reuters notes, Musk was initially seen as a hero in Ukraine, but later attitudes toward him changed. In the fall of 2022, he restricted access to Starlink, as his stance on Ukraine became more critical.

Experts emphasize that the Starlink system is particularly crucial for Ukraine’s drone operations.

“Ukraine relies on Starlink. They see it as their guiding star,” writes Reuters. “Losing Starlink would be a massive blow.”
