Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has described the upcoming elections to the country’s new unicameral Kurultai as “a truly historic event” and urged citizens to take part in the vote. He said the elections would mark the starting point for new reforms following the entry into force of the People’s Constitution.

Tokayev: Kurultai Elections Will Open a New Chapter in Kazakhstan’s History
“Next Sunday, our country will witness a truly historic event — the first elections to the new unicameral Kurultai,” Tokayev said in a televised address.

The president noted that Kazakhstan has been pursuing large-scale reforms in recent years. According to Tokayev, the election campaign was “substantive, open, competitive and civilized”, with political parties presenting their programmes through meetings with voters, media appearances, nationwide televised debates and social media discussions.

Tokayev said the country’s public agenda was changing. “New faces have emerged and interesting ideas have appeared. This is an important sign of political renewal,” he said, highlighting the active participation of young people, professional communities and entrepreneurs in public discussions.

The president expressed confidence that the Kurultai would bring together “professionals and patriots of our Motherland”. “The new legislative body should become a common platform for constructive views and aspirations. The Kurultai will set a high pace for the country’s further modernization,” Tokayev said.

He stressed that Kazakhstan would have to address complex challenges amid global pressures in order to join the ranks of developed countries. “This Sunday will be precisely such a fateful moment, when we will open a new page in the history of Kazakhstan,” the president said.

Tokayev called on citizens, particularly young people, to participate in the vote. “Participation in elections is the highest expression of the people’s will, a manifestation of civic responsibility and involvement in the destiny of our Motherland,” he said.
