At the 16th Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored Tom Cruise with an Honorary Oscar for his outstanding contribution to the film industry. The award was presented by director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

In his acceptance speech, Cruise recalled how his love for cinema began in childhood, when he watched a beam of light burst across the screen in a dark theater. He said that moment awakened a thirst for adventure, a desire for knowledge, and a passion for creating stories that expand the boundaries of the familiar world.

Throughout his career, Cruise has been nominated for four Academy Awards: for Best Actor in Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, for Best Supporting Actor in Magnolia, and as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick.

This year’s honorary Oscars also went to choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was given to Dolly Parton, who could not attend the ceremony due to health issues.
