U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for at least $1 billion, accusing the broadcaster of “malicious and offensive” falsification of his January 6, 2021 speech. The scandal has already led to the resignation of the BBC’s top executives.

According to The New York Times, the White House sent a formal letter demanding that the BBC retract its Panorama documentary, issue a public apology, and pay compensation.

An internal investigation by The Telegraph revealed that the film had been edited to splice together two separate parts of Trump’s speech, misleading viewers into believing he encouraged the storming of the U.S. Capitol.

Trump stated that if his demands are not met by 5 p.m. ET on November 14, he will file a lawsuit for damages “no less than $1 billion.”

The controversy prompted the resignation of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness.

The case has sparked one of the biggest credibility crises in the broadcaster’s history. “Faking a presidential address is not journalism — it’s propaganda,” said a senior White House official.
