US President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Oman if Muscat, in his words, “gets in the way” over the Strait of Hormuz. The remarks came as Iran and Oman continue talks on shipping routes through the strategically important waterway.

Fox News chief international correspondent Trey Yingst said he asked Trump about negotiations between Muscat and Tehran. The US president responded: “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the s*** out of them.” Trump did not specify what actions by Oman could trigger a US military strike.

During the same conversation, Trump said Iran should “raise the white flag of surrender,” while stressing that he had set no specific deadline for Tehran and was “in no hurry.”

Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are continuing negotiations over the arrangements for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the two sides had reached agreement on a map of shipping routes, although several issues remain under discussion. Earlier reports indicated that Tehran and Muscat were close to an agreement on new arrangements for maritime traffic rather than a full and unconditional reopening of the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is critical to global energy trade. Amid the continuing tensions, maritime traffic through the waterway has dropped sharply. Kpler data cited by Reuters showed that no commodity vessels passed through the strait on August 16, compared with 31 during the previous weekend.
