Uzbekistan and the US Strengthen Cooperation on Nuclear Safety

Uzbekistan and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding on radiation and nuclear safety. The document was concluded as part of the Uzbek delegation’s participation in the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The memorandum is aimed at developing cooperation between the regulatory authorities of the two countries in ensuring the safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. According to the Information Service of Uzbekistan’s Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, the agreement covers several key areas.
These include radiation and nuclear safety, licensing and inspection activities, improvement of the regulatory framework, emergency preparedness and response, as well as professional training and the exchange of expertise.
The document will also expand information and expert exchanges between the two countries’ regulatory authorities. This cooperation is intended to support reliable safety standards in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and strengthen practical interaction between the relevant institutions.
The memorandum was signed by A. Rafikov, Chairman of Uzbekistan’s Committee for Industrial, Radiation and Nuclear Safety, and H. K. Nieh, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
