Uzbekistan Nominates Itself for UN Security Council Membership

Uzbekistan has nominated itself for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2035-2036 term. This was announced by Uzbekistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ulugbek Lapasov, during a Security Council meeting chaired by China, which focused on reforming multilateral and global governance institutions.

According to the "Dunyo" news agency, Uzbekistan presented its official stance on key cooperation issues with the UN to the international community during the meeting. Participants were introduced to the large-scale reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan.

"It was emphasized that Uzbekistan supports multilateralism, the strengthening and improvement of global governance. Additionally, the importance of regional cooperation and the country’s interest in Afghanistan’s economic recovery were highlighted," the report stated.

Furthermore, Uzbekistan reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with the UN in combating transnational threats, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and organized crime.

"Participants were introduced to the 'Uzbekistan-2030' strategy, aimed at ensuring economic stability, reducing poverty, and expanding opportunities for youth. It was noted that 2025 has been declared the 'Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy' in Uzbekistan. Large-scale initiatives to mitigate the consequences of the Aral Sea crisis, including afforestation, water conservation, and the use of renewable energy sources, were also presented. The necessity of expanding international support for sustainable development in the Aral Sea region was emphasized," the report added.

Additionally, UN member states were invited to the UN Public Service Forum on the theme "Five Years to 2030: Accelerating Public Service Delivery for a Sustainable Future," which will be held in Samarkand in June 2025.

"Uzbekistan's commitment to ensuring global peace and security was underscored. In this context, Uzbekistan officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2035-2036 term," the report stated.

For reference, the UN Security Council consists of 10 non-permanent and 5 permanent members – the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and China. The permanent members hold veto power over resolutions.
