Yemenis Take Revenge on Israel for Gaza
World
On March 20, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted a missile launched from Yemen before it reached Israeli territory. The Houthis claimed that their attack was an act of retaliation for Israel’s strikes on Gaza. According to them, their target was Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.
The Houthis, the radical military wing of Yemen’s Shiite Zaydi group, claimed they used a “hypersonic ballistic missile” in this attack. They also stated that they targeted American warships in the Red Sea. These actions further escalate tensions in the Middle East.
On March 16, the Houthis announced an attack on the American aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and its accompanying warships. According to Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, the attack involved 18 missiles and one drone. Reuters reported that U.S. fighter jets shot down 11 drones, and one of the Houthi-launched missiles exploded in the air, falling into Yemen’s territorial waters.
The Houthis had halted military operations since January 19. However, on March 11, they threatened to resume attacks on Israeli ships after Israel stopped humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza.
On March 16, the U.S. launched airstrikes against Houthi positions. The attack was carried out on the personal orders of U.S. President Donald Trump. In his Truth Social post, Trump called the Houthis a “group engaged in an ongoing campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American and other ships, aircraft, and drones.”
In response to Israel’s military actions, the Houthis began attacking commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea and engaging in confrontations with the U.S. Navy.
