Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada approved Yevhenii Khmara as the country’s Defence Minister on August 19. His appointment received 312 votes, well above the 226 required for approval.
Khmara had served as acting Defence Minister for about a month following the government changes in July. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently submitted his candidacy to parliament.
Addressing lawmakers before the vote, Khmara identified strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities, supporting military personnel and developing the defence industry as key priorities.
Before becoming acting minister, Khmara served as a Deputy Defence Minister. On July 17, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers formally assigned him to temporarily perform the duties of Defence Minister.
His appointment completes the process of establishing the leadership of the Defence Ministry following the government reshuffle in July. Parliament also considered the appointment of Andrii Sybiha as Ukraine’s Foreign Minister.
