A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores Island, causing widespread damage, landslides and communication disruptions. The latest reports put the death toll at at least 20, while other sources report 38 fatalities; rescue operations are continuing.
The areas of Maumere, Sikka, Nagekeo and West Manggarai were among the hardest hit. Homes, schools, hospitals and government buildings were damaged. Around 2,000 residents were evacuated to temporary shelters. Landslides blocking roads and communication outages have complicated access for rescue teams in some areas.
The main earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks. Authorities also issued a tsunami warning, which was later lifted after no significant rise in sea levels was detected.
