The 83-year-old Margrethe II announced her intention to abdicate the throne in her New Year's speech on 31 December 2023. The date of 14 January was not chosen for this step by chance.

Frederik X is proclaimed the new king of Denmark
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark signed her official abdication on Sunday, 14 January at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen then proclaimed Margrethe II's son Frederik X as the new king.

Exactly 52 years ago, on 14 January 1972, Margrethe II ascended the Danish throne. Only her cousin, British Queen Elizabeth II, who died on 8 September 2022 after 70 years on the throne, ruled Europe longer.

As Margrethe II explained, the reason for her decision to abdicate was a back operation she underwent in February 2023. The operation was successful, but, as Margrethe pointed out, made her think about her prospects for the throne. When the Queen of Denmark announced her intention to abdicate, people gathered to hear her speech in front of Amalienborg residence in Copenhagen broke into spontaneous applause.
