Nursing Home Fire in Northern China

April 9, 2025: A fire at a nursing home located in China's Hebei province has resulted in the deaths of 20 people, according to Beijing's state news agency Xinhua.
The fire broke out on Tuesday night at the nursing home in Longhua County, approximately 180 km northeast of Beijing. Xinhua's report confirmed that by Wednesday morning, 20 people had been confirmed dead.
"Other elderly residents from the nursing home have been transferred to nearby hospitals for further observation and treatment," the news agency said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
For reference, deadly fires are relatively common in China due to weak building standards and a lack of attention to workplace safety.
In January, a fire at a vegetable market in Zhangjiakou city, northwest of Beijing, killed 8 people and injured 15.
A month earlier, a fire at a construction site in Rongcheng city in eastern China resulted in the deaths of 9 people.
"Other elderly residents from the nursing home have been transferred to nearby hospitals for further observation and treatment," the news agency said.
