Russian Court Sentences Oleksii Arestovych in Absentia to 11 Years in Prison

Russia's Second Western District Military Court has sentenced former freelance adviser to the Office of the President of Ukraine Oleksii Arestovych in absentia to 11 years in prison. The Russian court found him guilty of charges involving public calls for terrorist activity and the dissemination of what prosecutors described as knowingly false information about the Russian Armed Forces.
The verdict was delivered on August 28, 2026. Under the ruling, Arestovych is to serve the first three years of his sentence in prison, followed by the remainder in a general-regime penal colony. He was also barred for four years from activities involving the administration of websites and online channels through electronic or telecommunications networks.
According to Russia's Prosecutor General's Office, the case was linked, among other matters, to a video published on March 17, 2022. Russian investigators said the video contained calls to destroy railway infrastructure used to move and supply Russian troops. The case also included a publication dated April 8, 2022, concerning the strike on the railway station in Kramatorsk.
The case was heard without Arestovych's participation. Russian authorities said he is outside the country and has been placed on an international wanted list. According to court information, the sentence will begin to run from the moment of his detention or extradition to Russia.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force and may be appealed.
