In 2028, Samarkand will host the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), marking the first time the prestigious event will take place in Central Asia. More than 10,000 participants — including scientists, engineers, representatives of space agencies, and business leaders — are expected to attend. A large-scale exhibition will also be held, showcasing the latest achievements of the global space industry.

Samarkand to Host the International Astronautical Congress in 2028
The official announcement was made in Sydney at the closing of the current congress of the International Astronautical Federation. The choice of Samarkand carries special symbolism: over six centuries ago, the great scholar Mirzo Ulughbek built one of the largest observatories of his era in this very city.

The economic impact is also projected to be significant. In 2023, Sydney hosted the congress and generated nearly $27 million in revenue. Uzbekistan anticipates that the upcoming event will not only strengthen the country’s scientific and cultural prestige but also give a strong boost to tourism and the service sector.

By uniting Ulughbek’s astronomical legacy with the global dialogue on space, Samarkand is preparing to welcome one of the world’s most prestigious scientific gatherings.
