German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the European Union will be able to respond promptly to potential trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to him, the EU is ready to take countermeasures within an hour if Washington begins a trade attack on the European market.
Speaking at the first televised debates before the snap election, Scholz emphasized that his strategy for communication with Trump is "clear words and friendly conversations," but at the same time, Europe must remain united and ready for a harsh response.
The Chancellor also criticized Trump's allegations of possible military control over Greenland and the Panama Canal, as well as the US's proposed plans to relocate the population of Gaza, calling them a violation of international law. His opponent, Friedrich Mertz (HDI), acknowledged that Washington's policies are alarming, but suggested waiting for real steps.
Elections in Germany are scheduled for February 23rd, and the candidates' position on foreign policy issues is becoming one of the key factors in the election campaign.
