President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev sent a message of condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Embassy in Tashkent reported on March 2.

In his message, the Uzbek leader expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the ayatollah, highlighting his significant contribution to strengthening Iranian statehood, ensuring social stability, and preserving national values.

The letter also emphasized his role in developing comprehensive cooperation and long-term partnership between Uzbekistan and Iran.

Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 amid US and Israeli strikes. He was 86 years old and had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989.

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov held phone talks with counterparts from several regional countries to discuss the situation and convey messages of support on behalf of Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Earlier, Uzbekistan’s Foreign Ministry expressed serious concern over the sharp escalation in the region.
