Trump Privately Signals JD Vance as Preferred 2028 Successor

U.S. President Donald Trump privately told Republican donors that he would like to see Vice President JD Vance become the party's presidential nominee in 2028. However, the White House has not officially endorsed any potential candidate.
According to The Washington Post, Trump told donors during an Oval Office meeting about two weeks ago that "at the end of the day, we need to elect JD." Sources cited by the newspaper said the president has been impressed by Vance's role in diplomatic initiatives, domestic policy efforts and his public defense of the administration's agenda.
At the same time, other sources familiar with the discussions said Trump has not made a final decision. They noted that he continues to weigh both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and could still change his position.
Axios previously reported that many Republicans view Vance as Trump's most likely political heir, although internal debate continues over the future direction of the MAGA movement.
U.S. media also report that Trump is expected to delay any formal endorsement until a later stage of the 2028 campaign cycle. As of now, the White House has issued no official statement naming a preferred successor.
