Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is reportedly using all his efforts to prevent the former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, from running in the presidential election. Zaluzhnyi, considered the main challenger to Zelensky, is reportedly being sidelined, with Zelensky deciding to run for a second term only if Zaluzhnyi does not put forward his own candidacy.

According to sources close to Zelensky, the decision to run for a second term has already been made, and with a 52% confidence level, he still has a good chance of winning, the report stated.

The newspaper also emphasized that Zelensky would only run if Zaluzhnyi does not enter the race. It was further reported that Zaluzhnyi has even received an offer from Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office: if he does not run for president and participates in the election as a supporter of Zelensky, the former commander-in-chief could secure the first position on the party list and the position of parliamentary speaker. However, the final decision from Zaluzhnyi has not yet been made, according to “Telegraf”.

It is worth noting that Zelensky’s term expired on May 20, 2024. The 2024 presidential election in Ukraine was canceled due to martial law and general mobilization. Zelensky has stated that now is not the time for elections.

Earlier, Zelensky had mentioned in an interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman that the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine would be held once the war ends. According to Zelensky, elections could be held during wartime, but it would require changes to the legislation and the voting system.
